- Availability of cards for PCroute or PCbridge.
-
- PCroute and PCbridge were first designed to work with the Western Digital
- WD8003E card. Later Western Digital came out with 16 bit versions
- WD8013EBT that PCroute and PCbridge also support. Unfortuately both
- of these cards are no longer available. The have been replaced with the
- WD8003EP and WD8013EP (as well as others). Unforunately these cards are
- not exact replacements and SOME people have experienced problems getting
- them to work. Thus if you are buying new cards you have a problem.
- Some solutions are:
-
- 1) Try it and see. As I said most people do not have problems. For
- all I know it is not the cards at fault but some other aspect
- of installation. It is also possible that certain early batches
- of cards were slightly different and this caused the bug. Thus
- you stand a good chance of it working by simply using the
- WD80xEP cards. Be aware that you MAY have problems however.
-
- 2) Use 3c507 card. PCroute also supports this card. This card IS
- still available. Unforunately it is more expensive. On the other
- hand, it IS a very good, high performance card, so you are not
- spending your money for nothing.
-
- 3) Use packet drivers. PCroute (but NOT PCbridge) can used packet
- drivers (available from sun.soe.clarkson.edu in packet-drivers
- directory). This allows most ethernet cards to be used.
- Unfortuately this solution slows the router down by more than
- half.
-
- 4) Use the COMPEX card.
- It has been reported that a WD8013EBT clone exists and works
- well with PCroute and PCbridge. It is made by COMPEX. It
- is also quite cheap (cheaper than the original!). The
- model number is #ENET-16-COMBO (supports UTP/AUI/BNC).
- Revision D has been confirmed to work. Cost is $115 (3/93).
- There seems to be a version that is slightly less expensive
- ($95) that does not have UTP support. A possible vendor
- is given below. Note that this information is supplied simply
- as a courtesy, it is not a recomendation for this card or
- this particular vendor.

- If you are buying Western Digital cards (now owned by SMC), or 3Com cards
- (andy maybe even COMPEX cards), the best place to get a good price is probably
- the back of PC Shopper Magazine. If you don't have this most other PC
- oriented magazines have a shopping section (PC Magazine, Byte etc).
